Five Safe Ways to Keep Bugs At Bay

two ants.
Bugs, especially in South Carolina, seem to just be a part of life. They were here long before us and they will probably be here long after. However, just because we have to coexist with bugs doesn't mean we have to welcome them into our kitchens and family rooms. Below are some tips on keeping bugs out of your home and keeping you and your family (and the planet) safer in the process.

1. Keep It Clean

The best way to keep a pest problem under control is simply to not let one start. Lots of bugs thrive in environments where they have easy access to food. The best way to prevent roaches and flies from taking up residence in your kitchen is to make sure that they can't easily get to your crumbs; scrubbing out the sink and wiping down the counters after cooking is a great way to make sure they won't be able to find any crumbs or drops of water to feed on. Foods that roaches are particularly inclined to seek out include coffee grounds and chocolate; houseflies are attracted to decomposing food and fruit flies, to fruit.

2. Keep It Dry

Bugs, and mosquitoes in particular, are also very attracted to damp areas where they will be able to get water. To avoid mosquitoes and silverfish taking up residence in your house, fix any dripping faucets and clean out any wet debris clogging up your gutter. Any standing sources of water are also bound to attract bugs; keep birdbaths and glasses or bowls of water clean and fresh. Staying away from especially humid, swampy areas will lessen the amount of mosquito bites you are likely to get, immensely lowering the likelihood of being infected with the many diseases they carry.

3. Put Herbs to Use

Bugs like the smell of food, but certain herbs and plants are said to provide a safe and natural way of keeping them at bay. Among the most popular for general bug prevention are rosemary, chrysanthemum, plants in the allium family, and petunias. To target specific insects, try planting mint to deter spiders, placing bay leaves around areas of the room to prevent roaches, and lavender to repel moths and flies.

4. Go Easy on Perfumes

Fruity shampoos and body washes smell great to you, but smell like real food for bugs, which draws them in. To prevent inviting bugs unintentionally, stick to lightly scented soaps and perfumes, and eliminate similar fruity synthetic smells around your home. Another tip – wear light clothing when you're outside. Not only is light clothing better at keeping you cool in the sun than darker clothing is, but mosquitoes and other bugs are less attracted to light colored clothing.

5. Pick Your Battles

While it might be tempting to squash every bug that you come into contact with, that's not always the best idea. Non-venomous house spiders, for example, are a huge asset when it comes to controlling pest populations in your home. On top of that, sometimes squashing a bug causes more problems; cockroaches release pheromones when they are squished that actually attract more. Some spiders, like the wolf-spider, carry their young on their back, which means killing the parent spider is going to release a whole lot more. Make sure you know what you're dealing with and the best way to safely get it out of your house before blindly stepping on it.

These tips should help with minor bug infestations, and are helpful as preventative measures, but the best way to get a pest control problem fully eliminated is to talk to a professional. Just like any other profession, they are trained in how to keep you and your family safe, and get any bugs that are making life difficult out.
