Natural Ways to Keep Mosquitoes at Bay

natural herb to keep mosquitoes.
Summertime and mosquito bites go hand in hand, especially here in the Lowcountry. Manufactured bug sprays are helpful, but often include harsh, harmful chemicals, strong smells, and only last for a couple of hours at a time. Plus, it can be expensive to keep up with purchasing plastic bottles over and over again, and time consuming to deal with re-application. Here are some natural ways to keep mosquitoes at bay this summer!

Herbs

There are several ways in which plants and herbs can help repel mosquitoes. Citronella candles are always an option and can be found in most home and gardening stores. Another simple solution? Buy mint and lavender shrubs and plant them in your garden. Mosquitoes are repelled by the scent and it will likely keep them at bay. If you mulch your garden, consider using red cedar mulch chips. It isn't just aesthetically pleasing; red cedar is another natural mosquito repellent.

Outdoor Improvements

One of the main things that could be attracting mosquitoes to your yard? Sources of standing water, like birdbaths, gutters, and ponds, are prime breeding sites for mosquitoes. By removing these sources before the adult mosquitoes have a chance to hatch, mosquito control will get much easier. Drain any standing water sources, invest in mosquito-eating fish for fish ponds, and cover and chlorinate your backyard pool according to safety standards. It's also a good idea to invest in some screens for your porches and windows so that you can enjoy all the fun of being outside with none of the bugs. Finally, try to stay inside around prime mosquito activity hours, which tend to fall around dusk and dawn.

Supplements

Some supplements are said to make you smell strange and unappealing to mosquitoes without having any noticeable effect to the humans around you. For example, some say that taking a B-1 capsule daily will send out an off-putting scent and deter biting. The same goes for apple cider vinegar; a tablespoon or so taken daily a few days before entering a mosquito-heavy area can work wonders against preventing bites. Another popular supplement is garlic, which is pungent even to humans, and it is said that taking a capsule daily will release excess garlic through your pores and keep mosquitoes away.

Homemade Sprays

If you still prefer the added safeguard of applying a bug protectant to the skin, consider these remedies before reaching for the store-bought bottle. Mix one tablespoon of vanilla extract with one cup of water (increase or decrease the ratio to fit your needs) and apply to exposed areas. Alternatively, wipe white vinegar on the areas of the skin that will be exposed to the critters, or apply baby oil before heading outdoors. Both the smell and the slippery texture of your skin will help deter the bugs from latching on.

These natural remedies are a great way to prevent mosquitoes from feasting on you and your family in the muggy summer months, without resorting to using harsh and potentially harmful chemicals. Keep these tips in mind next time you go outside and start to enjoy a mosquito-free summer!
